The Piazza FamilyUpdated July 3, 2003 | I am researching the Paul Aloysius Piazza family. He was born in Donaldsonville, Louisiana on January 20, 1890 and married Rose Guarino, born in Bisacquino, Italy on May 22, 1891.They moved to Bessemer, Alabama to work with his family in the candy business with the Schilleci's.This business was later known as Superior Ice Cream by the middle of the 1900's. My Grandfather's sister Lily Piazza was married to Charles Schilleci.Papa went to work for the Schilleci’s early in the 1900s.The Schilleci’s started a candy business in New Orleans.During the depression at the end of the 1800s, the candy business fell on hard times so they decided to move the family business to Bessemer. Some cousins of the Schilleci’s were already there.Bessemer was a boomtown in those days because of the steel business that prospered in Birmingham and even in Bessemer. While in Bessemer, the family started a sundries and candy business that finally turned into the ice cream company known as Superior Ice Cream. That is when Papa went to Bessemer because his sister Lily had beckoned him to come work with them in the family business. They had 5 daughters, Rosetta (born 1909), Anna Clair (Anabel born 1911), Lillian (1912), Margaret (1916), Evelyn(1921) and one son, Victor (1919). Around 1931 he packed his family into a car and moved to Los Angeles, stopping along the way in Houston for a while, where they left Lillian behind to marry her sweetheart Thomas. The remaining sisters married and settled in Southern California.Victor made several trips to and from Bessemer, Alabama before he married and eventually settled in Southern California also. We are certain that my Grandmother came from Bisacquino, Italy when she was six months old, most likely through the port of New Orleans. Please feel free to email me with any information you may have that would be beneficial. |
