Notes for Augustine LaCoste II:
Dauphin Island, which technically belonged to the United States after it purchased the Louisiana Territory from France in 1803, for $75,000, was still occupied by Spain during their occupation of the area. There were many land grants made during foreign occupation. One of note was made by Joseph Moro/Moreau to the Spanish Governor on July 1, 1781. When the British Governor left the island, he tried to sell it for $5,000, but had no purchasers. OnDecember 5, 1783, a Spanish grant was recorded to Joseph Moro/Moreau. At his death he willed this to his niece, Euphrosie Lemé/ L'May. A patent from the United States to Augustin LaCoste, her son, dated May 22, 1838, covered 2264.12 acres of Dauphin Island. Later portions of this were sold to Garrow, Brown, Lyon & others.
Apparently, there were other members of the LaCoste family living in the Mobile area during its early Colonial period but I have not been able to connect them to each other. The 1830 U.S. census for Mobile, AL shows a Mary LaCoste as Head of Household. Except for slaves, she is the only one listed in the household. On the same sheet (page 9) there is a "Mad. [Madame?] D Coste."No other info is given.
In the 1880 U.S. census for Mobile, his son John states that both of his parents (Augustin & Elizabaeth) were born in Florida. The L.D.S. website shows there was an Augustine LaCoste (female) born in Florida on 28 Oct 1793. She married Pierre Cherbonnier in New Orleans and, therefore, John would not have had the surname Lacoste. Augustin had quite a land holding in the state of Alabama and can be found extensively in St. Stephens, Alabama Land Records. There are also a number of records to be found in U.S. House of Representative Private Claims, Vol. 2 approving private land claims made by Augustin LaCoste.
A search of the Mobile City Directory for 1867 shows "Lacoste, A., carpenter, Whistler." No other information is given so it may or may not be Augustin Lacoste.
