Notes for Hannah (Anne) Hirsch:

children over this period; all referred by different agencies. The first and thrid week were Child Guidance childen plus those refered by health service. The 2nd and 4th week were children whose parents are on probation. The 5th week Social Services and the last week were children connected with our youth work....In my spare time I''m working at a hostel for battered wives."
1983 wrote: Last year I had quite a few disturbed children under my care at camp. This year I am going to start fund raising again to get money for tents and to buy food.Last year I was lucky, I managed to raise 350 pounds from a charity organization. This year I won't be ableto do this as I no longer work for a voluntary organization.I now work for the local council, who never have any money, or so they tell you.
I came to England on Nov. 8, 1939.I went to foster parents who kept me for about 12 months and then I was sent to a children's home, since her son who was two years younger than I, always played with me and rejected his younger sister who was two years younger.I made a disasterous marriage.I was in the middle of divorcing my husband when he died.He was an allcoholic.Life at times was very difficult.I went into nursing in 1963 and nursed for 13 years.I then did a Youth Leader's course and now do Youth and Community work.I enjoy my work very much.Sometimes I get very depressed since my clients seem to spend a lifetime getting from one mess into another.I work in an urban deprived area with all the usual things lacking. We have a very high rate of unemployment, a very high crfeime rate, children at risk, and as we live and I work near the docks a lot of prostitution.A lot of young girls are tempted by the easy money. We have a lot of single girls with 2, 3, 4 and 5 illegitamate children. It is the children we are concerned about as it is impossible to break the behavior pattern. But we do what we can.
I am doing a course in Play Leadership at a college of further education. This is a day course and quite honestly a load of rubbish, the only good thing about the course is the college library.I am also doing a partime course in Family Therapy, which is very intersting.I have learned a lot in this course.I have thought of doing a full time course but I don't know if I would get a grant and would I get employment at the end of it.I am working quite a lot with families as a social service volunteer, as with cut backs there is mostly crisis work being done by social workers.I also still work with disturbed children.
At the moment I am busy at my most unfavorable occupation - fund raising.
Zoe Costa, Anne's aunt wrote, "When my sister and her husband were in the lager, your grandfather Louis Rosenstein, invited Anne to come to Chicago and live with his family. However, my sister thought it was too far and Anne went to England on a children's transport.
