Wesley A. Goettel, age 80, of Fargo, North Dakota, who died on Tuesday, December 1, 1998 at Trinity Lutheran Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri.
Wes was born July 4, 1918 in Blue Earth, Minnesota to Aaron and Augusta Goettel.He attended school in Blue Earth and graduated in the class of 1936.He was very active in football and basketball.He then went on to attend college at Mankato State where he played football.
Wes served in the Army in World War II as a Staff Sergeant in the Rangers and was a prisoner-of-war in Italy.After returning from overseas, he married Winona Straly in 1945.She died young in 1969.He married Esther Renhowe in 1974.She died in 1981.
Wes retired in 1977 after 31 years of carrying mail for the US Post Office in Fargo.
Wes was a long time member of Calvary United Methodist Church and then Bethlehem Lutheran Church.He was an avid bowler and entered the FM Bowling Hall of Fame in 1983.He enjoyed visiting with his relatives and celebrating birthdays and holidays with his family.He also enjoyed spending part of the past 40 years at Sunset Beach on Lake Lizzie.
Wes is survived by two daughters, Tamara (Terry) Miller, Kansas City, MO; Cheryl (Michael) Carpenter, Bloomington, IL; two sons, Mark (Mari) Goettel, Pelican Rapids, MN; Michael (Janelle) Goettel, Hillsboro, ND; a sister Alta Zupp, Austin, MN; a brother Floyd Goettel, Thousand Oaks, CA; 8 grandchildren, and his special friend Virgina Vraa.Wes is also survived by two stepsons, Bruce Renhowe and John Renhowe.
