Obituary of S. O. Swackhamer:
S. O. Swackhamer, one of the pioneer citizens of Unioncounty, died at his home in Union Sunday afternoon, October 10, following astroke of paralysis several weeks ago. The funeral took place from the M. E. Church Tuesday afternoon at 2o'clock, under Masonic auspices, and was largely attended not only by people ofthis city, but by many from La Grande and other valley points.
The Methodist church was well filled at the time of thefuneral service, when the choir sang "Abide With Me," following whichRev. Cullison read from the 90th Psalm and the 12th chapter ofEcclesiastes. There was prayer by Rev.Edwards, of the M. E. Church, of La Grande, followed by the singing of"Lead Kindly Light" by the choir. Rev. Cullison took for his text the 6th verse of the 64th chapter ofIsaiah, and delivered a very impressive and practical sermon, followed byreading a sketch of the life of Mr. Swackhamer and giving a few personalrecollections of the man who "stood high on ideals." The service closed by the choir singing"Blest be the Tie That Binds." The floral offerings were most beautiful.
The march to the cemetery was taken up from the church, along line of Knights Templar and other members of the Masonic fraternity beingprominent by thir uniforms and regalia, over fifty being present, of whom aboutone-half were from La Grande. Inaddition to these were a long line of automobiles and people on foot, whofollowed the remains to their last resting place.
At the cemetery the service was in charge of the Masonicfraternity, and as usual was most beautiful and impressive, directed by PastGrand Master W. T. Wright of Union.
Out of respect for the deceased, who long residence andactive life in this county had endeared him to all, the business houses of thecity were closed during the funeral, from 2 to 4 o'clock.
Samuel O. Swackhamer was born in Warren county, NewJersey, July 25, 1837, and died at his home in Union, Oregon, October 10, 1915,aged 78 years, 2 months and 15 days. When a lad of five years his parents moved to Pennsylvania. In 1860 he moved to Denver, Colorado, and in1863 moved to La Grande, Oregon. OnOctober 9, 1862, he was married to Miss Clara E. Dodge, of Montpelier,Vermont. To this union were born ninechildren: Mrs. Clara Mulholland, MaryOlive, Luther, Alta, Elizabeth, Maud, Walter, Arthur and Chester. Mrs. Mulholland, Walter, and Chester stillsurvive, the others having died when small. The mother of these children passed away in November 1908, and Mr.Swackhamer later maried Miss Ella Finley, of San Diego, California, whosurvives him.
Mr. Swackhamer served two terms as sheriff of Unioncounty. He also sereved as Register andReceiver of the U S. Land Office at La Grande. At one time he was a member of the City Council. He was a Mason of long standing, also amember of the Methodist Episcopal church, which he attended faithfully.
Deceased was a member of the Al Kader Temple of the MysticShrine of Portland and a member of the Eastern Oregon Commandry No. 6 of LaGrande. He was a member of the EasternStar of this city.

Note: Theselistings were the sole entries in Oregon indexes from 1860 to 1900 for the nameSwackhamer or any
spelling variation I could think of. I could find NO listing for the name in 1910La Grande, Union County, Oregon.
Note: I scannedall of 1920 Globe, Gila County, Arizonawithout locating any listing for Swackhamer.
Note: In a scan of1910 Blue Earth, Minnesota, I could not locate any entries for Swackhamer orDaisy Nichols.
There are several pages in that census tape of very poorreading quality, but the area around Lewis and Lydia Nichols is pretty good andI could not find Daisy or her parents near there.
