Death Enters the Martin Home and Takes Away the Mother --Burial Today.
The announcement Sunday morning last, of the death of Mrs.Bertha Martin, which occurred at 2 o'clock that morning, in the city of DesMoines, occasioned expressions of regret by our people generally.
She had gone to that city several months ago that she mightbe with her daughters, Clara and Lulu; who were attending a conservatory ofmusic there, to cheer both herself and them; to enjoy some of the pleasures andcomforts of the capital city, and break the monotony of the winter's spell ofquiet as it is found in the average country town; she returned to her home herea few weeks ago, but only for a brief visit. It is little more than a fortnight since that she was taken with anillness that necessitated her confinement; like many another her illness was notconsidered dangerous, but as time worn on it became apparent that she was notimproving, but the reverse; the family physician was summoned, as were also themembers of the family remaining here. Despite the efforts made to regain herself she weakened, her conditiongrew gradually worse, and death followed; the members of the family were allpresent at the time. Slowly she sank,as though in slumber -- yet into the sleep that knows no waking.
Bertha Theresia (Goettel) Martin was born in the province ofPrussia, Germany in the year 1842, and in her early youth migrated to America, and located in Wisconsin. She wasmarried in 1858 to Julius Martin, and unto them were born twelve children; ofthese five are living, the remainder being dead, as is also the husband, whopreceded her by eight years. Foursisters also survive her.
She has held a membership in the Evangelical faith for fortyfour years and possessed many noble personal traits of character.
The funeral occurs from the family home this afternoon at 2o'clock; services are also to be held from the First Evangelical church, byRevs. Hauser of this city, and Knoche of Cedar Falls.
