George Harley Schmidt

The casketed remains of Staff Sgt.George H. Schmidt, young Air Corps veteran, killed during World War II, arrivedin Ladysmith, Wisconsin Wednesday morning, accompanied by a uniformedescort.
Son of W. F. Schmidt, of Ladysmith,Sgt. Schmidt was shot down on Hamburg, Germany, June 30, 1944, while serving asa radio operator on a B-17. His body hasbeen interred in a private cemetery just outside Hamburg prior to beingtransferred to the States for re-burial.
Born in Ladysmith February 22, 1924,George was graduated from local high school May 14, 1942. He joined the Army Air Corps November 19,1942 and left Kearney, Nebraska by B-17 for England on February 24, 1944. During his brief service career he had beenawarded two air medals, three oak leaf clusters and the purple heart, havingmore than 30 missions.
He was a member of Ladysmith Churchof Christ. Survivors are the father, W.F. Schmidt, three brothers Ferdinand, Arthur and Willis, four sisters VeraGolubiff, Francis Eisenmann, Betty Chmielowiec and Marguerite Schmidt. His mother preceded him in death.
