Sally Wise Felton was born Abt. 1751 in NC, and died date unknown in Pilot Creek, Surry County, NC.She married Azariah Denney on 1776 in Surry County, NC, son of Samuel Denney and Sarah Elizabeth Suddarth (Southard). Notes for Sally Wise Felton: HIS WIFE SALLY Last name not certain, could be Fulton per William Denney of Vancouver, WA. If I were a betting person, I would say the last name was Felton as this plus the fact of her mothers last name being "HARRELL" fits in with use of the name in later generations such as my great grandfather "Harrel Felton Denney". Joel Denny's letter also said the name was Fulton, we shall leave it as Felton until proved out. William Denney thinks it is impossible to be Felton as her father Richard Felton was never around Surry County and was from the Chowan and Hertford Counties in eastern NC. Per an internet message from William Denney of Vancouver, WA on Feb 15, 1998, he appears to have proof showing that the father of Sally Wise Felton CAN NOT be Richard Felton and in fact has to be one Job Felton of Oglethorpe, GA. He cites Job's will which names Sarah Denne as a daughter and papers in Job's estate files which shows a receipt signed by Azariah Denny for $10 received as paid in full for Job's daughter, Sally Denny's legacy. This Job Felton did have children Harrel Felton and William Felton which could explain the use of these names in later generations. The one point that bothers me is GEORGIA, William does not explain the connection of how the Georgia people and North Carolina Dennys came about. I will leave this all up to experts to figure out and keep Richard Felton for now as her father and leave this info here for anyone wanting to explore it further. DEC 1999: I have some papers from Ima Gene (GUTHERY) Boyd that may further confuse the issue or then again, may show additional proof of one chain of thought. She provided me an abstract that shows Job Felton's will was recorded in P. 63, Book B, Oglethorpe, GA Wills. I do not see any Sarah Denne there but there is a SALLY DUNN which could have been Sarah SALLY Denne depending on the persons interpretation of the writing. What really caught my attention is that in his will the names Phyllis Gentry, Ruth Rainwater, daughters of Job Felton. Asenith Denny, daughter of Azariah Denny/Sally Felton married a Elisha Gentry in 1811, their son Azariah Denny Gentry married Martha Rainwater. Ima Gene Boyd descends from this line thus this shows that our people were definitely involved with the Georgia Feltons thus Willian Denneys theory may be correct as to the parents of Sally Felton, Azariah's wife. Sally Felton shows up throughout family folk lore as a great woman of her time and the name Felton is passed on down through the generations. Because of the prominence of Sally Felton in the genealogy of this branch of the Denney family, the Felton genealogy was partially explored & it was found that the influence of this woman can be explained as the genealogy of her line bears out her wonderful character. A Mr. Felton, President of the Felton Seed Company of Sioux City, Iowa has a genealogy of the Felton family. Richard Felton III, Sally's father, was an ancestor of all the North Carolina & George Feltons. More About Sally Wise Felton and Azariah Denney: Marriage: 1776, Surry County, NC.
