Notes for Jacob Haldeman:
Jacob Haldeman was one of the earliest settlers in Rapho township, Lancaster county, and died possessed of very considerable land there. He married Maria Miller, a daughter of Henry Miller, of Earl Township, Lancaster County, who survived him together with a family of some twelve children.
Jacob Haldeman was granted a warrant for 100 acres of land to be surveyed in Donegal Township, Lancaster County, on 29 April 1741. (Recited in Patent for 218 acres 40 perches granted to Jacob Holdeman 26 October 1762, Patent Book AA-4, 316, Land Office, State Capitol, Harrisburg, PA.) Assuming that the year 1722 is correct for the date of his birth, he would have been only nineteen years of age at the time. This may have been the improvement Peter Haldeman had settled on. Through the years Jacob Haldeman bought adjoining tracts of land. In his will dated 12 February 1783, he bequeathed 153 acres of his farm to his son Abraham and 188 acres to his youngest son Peter. (Will book "D", Vol.1, P.307-311 at the Lancaster County Courthouse.) When Rapho Township was created out of Donegal Township, the land of Jacob Haldeman fell within the bounds of the new township. In his will he names his twelve children in the order of their birth, namely: Christian, Jacob, Barbara, John, Maria, Abraham, Elizabeth, Fronica, Ann, Peter, Madgalena, and Susanna.
When his son Peter died, it is said that Christian's son Jacob inherited the land. But Peter's will bequeaths the land to John Shelhorn, his brother-in-law.However, John and his wife moved to Maryland. So, it is possible that the land ended up in Jacob's hands.
His son Abraham moved to Somerset County. He sold his inherited land to his brother John.John later sold this same land to his brother Christian.
He was a near relative of the noted British general, Sir Frederick Haldimand, K.B., who served with distinction in the armies of Sardinia and Prussia, entered the military service of King George in 1754, and was appointed lieutenant-colonel of the 16th Regiment of Royal Americans in January 1756.In 1776 Sir Frederick was commissioned a general in America, and subsequently became commander-in-chief of His Majesty's forces and governor of the province of Quebec.A tradition in the Lancaster County family states that in 1773 General Haldimand visited the family and wished to adopt one of Jacob Haldeman's children, but the offer was refused.
During the troubles which resulted in the War of the Revolution he was one of the Committee of Public Safety for Rapho township, and appears as a member of the "Committee of Observation" for Rapho Township, Lancaster County [Vide proceedings of Nov. 8, 1775, Pennsylvania Archives, Vol. XIII, pp.275 and 294].(This qualifies descendants for DAR and SAR membership.)The President of this committee was Benjamin Franklin and Col. George Ross was Vice-President of the committee and also representative to Lancaster County. The meetings were held in Philadelphia , PA .
His lineal descent is from an honored German-Swiss stock, sometimes spelled Haldimand, according to the French, or Halderman, more distinctively German.
