1.One story relates that he went to Northumberland (later Westmoreland Co), Va by 1650 or before.In 1650, he would be 18 years old.
Originally purchased300 acres of land in Westmoreland Co.
2.There is a recorded deposition in Northumberland Co Va in July 1658 that he came toVirginia on the ship "Potomac," at age 25. (That would be 1657)He purchased 300 acres in Northumberland Co Va before July 1658.Full name of ship "Potomack Mecht", commanded by ROBERT CLARKE.
In George's will he lists himself as "mariner".(8 Oct 1688, five years before his death.)
COURT CASE:30 hogsheads of tobacco stowed on board, owned by the LEE family.They were represented in court by Mrs. Hannah Lee.Uponarrival in Zeeland, the tobacco was found to be rotten and unfit for sale.The Dutch refused buy.The Lees sued for damages.On 20 July 1658, GEORGE DURANT testified on behalf of his commander, that the hold remained dry during the entire voyage.The tobacco waswas spoiled when it was originally loaded in Virginia.Resolution of case:unknown.

They had a total of 9 children, the rest of whom were born in what became North Carolina.
4. Sold Westmoreland Co property to RICHARDand THOMAS BUSHROD.This property was on theSOUTH SIDE OF THE POTOMAC RIVER, near an areaCALLED NOMENY BAY.
He had formerly purchased this land from DR RICE MADDOCKS, a well known local doctor. .
As part of the payment, George Durant built Dr. Maddocks a 50 foot tobacco barn.
Subsequently, Dr Maddocks was murdered by three men (EDMUND GODDARD, JOHN FRYER, AND WILLIAM WEBB)around 1662.These 3 men were convicted and jailed.His wife, Ann Maddocks, was left awidow.
ROBERT NOBLE, was paid 500 ponds of tobacco for performing the autopsy on Rice Maddocks.
4.DOCUMENTS:
a.18 DEC 1660, GEORGE DURANT signed that he owed MR. CHARLES ASHTON (the high sheriff of the Co:"one man servant betwist the age of 16 and 30, to be paid 1 March next.
b.3 Feb 1661George Durant authorized as the attorney of ROBERT MOSELEY inhis case against a suit by RICHARD GRANGER.
5.OTHER VIRGINIA LAND GRANTS:
400 ACRES in Lower Norfolk Co.
700 acres in what is now Currituck Co NC. He received what later became the Carolina property in Sept 1670, for the transportation of 14 persons.

a,Nansemond Co land grant made to ANTHONY BRANCH 6 Oct 1665 for the transportation of 6 persons.(George Durant is listed as being transported 3 times and his wife once.)
b,Nansemond land grant to GODFREY HUNTApril 1664 (for transportation of 12 persons, including a GEORGE DURAM.)
5.LOOKING FOR NEW LAND: In 1658, he joined a party composed of JOHN BATTLE, DR. THOMAS RELFE, ROGER WILLIAMS, THOMAS JARVIS, JOHN HARVEY, JOHN JENKINS and others, to explore and settle the wilderness of the Albemarle.(At that time this was a frontier of Virginia called Roanoke.)Most of these men were from the Isle of Wight and Nansemond Co.)
The explorers speedily bought land from the Indians.Goerge was a frequent witness to these deeds.
Deed dated 24 Sept 1660, found in the Norflok Co records in 1665, grants the entire tip of the peninsula (which is now Pasquotank Co in North Carolina to CAP. NATHANIELL BATTS.IT IS SIGNED WITH THE MARK OF THE KISCUTANEWH (KILCOCANEN) CHIEF OF THE YEOPIM IiNDIANS.This deed granted Batts: "all of ye landon the southwest side of Pascotank River from ye mouth of said river to ye head of new BEGIN CREEK".:Deed was recorded in Virginia, as Roanoke was considered part of the colony at that time. This deed predates by 18 months the deed to George Durant which for years was considered the oldest land grant.
CAPTAIN NATHANIELL BATTS was a famous explorer and fur trader who lived in Lower Norolk co.
His brother RICHARD BATTS was a wealthy sea captain and merchant from Barbados, who traded with Virginia.
John, being a mariner,probably met Richard Batts firstand was later introduced to Nathaniel.However, he could have met Nathaniell Batts in Northumberland Co, as there is a court record for a Nathaniell Batts, who was accused of beatng a man while intoxicated.This is in accordance of Nathaniell Batts' reputation as a hard drinker and swearer.
After 2 years of exploring,on 4 Aug 1661, George Durant purchased his own land from Cisketando, a Yeapim Indian Chief.
The second tract of land was purchsedon 13 March 1661 from Kilconen, the same chief that had sold land to Nathaniell Batts.(This deed is still in existence)
The land still bears the name DURANT'S NECK (formerly known as WIKACOME is located on a point of land bordered by ROANOKESound (NOW ALBEMARLE SOUND) in southern PERQUIMANS CO."Perquimans means "land of beautiful women" and was named by the Yeopim Indiands.That is, Roanoke became known as Albemarleand later Perquimans.

1704- Edenton founded.
George Durant's land had virgin forests, holly trees, lofty pines, white juniper and rhodedendrons.Thesoil was composed of sand and heavy humus.Crops:corn and wheat.Cattle and swine thrived.The pines provided tar and pitch needed by naval interests.Thegroundyeilded herbs, including "saxafras", used as "druggs" by European apothecaries.The wide rivers offered transortation for settlers and teemed with fish.
By 1662, George Durant had built a house and had cleared a part of the land.
Hishome plantation was known as WIKACOME and later DURANT'S NECK.Another document referred to the plantation as BERTY POINT. t.
6.TITLE PROBLEMS:In 1663, the Governor of Virginia (Sir William Berkeley) told all the settlers who had obtained land from the Indians that they must now obtain grants from VIRGINIA.At this time, the Governor granted toGEORGE CATCHAMNY (CATAHMAID) of Northumberland Co, the same land purchased by Durant, who was already settled on the land and refursed to leave
A compromise was reached.Catchmaid settled on the eastern side, acknowledged Durant's right to the WESTERN side of the point and promised to have the land patented in Durant's name.Catchmaid, member of the Virginia House of Burgesses, died before the papers could be signed.
Catchmaid's widow, remarried a wealthy Quaker named TIMOTNY BIGGS, who renewed the land feud.Title was cleared in 1697(after Durant's death.)A suit was brought against Edward Catchmaid of London, nephew and heir to GEORGE CATCHMAID.The suit resulted in giving the Durant sons the title to their father's land, on which the family had ALREADYlived for over 35 years..
By 1665, he decided to live permanently in Roanoke (later Albemarle).He sold his Virginia lands and became one of the area's most properous merchants.
By 1665, the Roanoke area was not part of Virginia, but had been included in the province of Carolina.
KING CHARLES II of England (newly restored to the throne)designated 8 Lords Proprietors to govern the new coloney.The new name became the COUNTY OF ALBEMARLE.
7. Hewas thought for years to have received the earliest recorded deed to land in North Carolina 1661.
Also grantfrom Kelccomen, great Indian chief of the Yeopins (also spelled Cisketando, King of the Yeopin Indians)Recently another earlier deed was found, which makes this the 2nd earliset. .By 1663 there were 2.000 people living along the Chowan River.
By 1662, he lived on that land, which later became North Carolina in 1665.The land is known as Durant's neck (formerly known as WIKACOME) and is located on a point of land borderd by Roanoke Sount (now Albemarle Sount) in SOUTHERN PERQUIMANS.

8. CULPEPPER'S REBELLION.He joined Culpepper in leadingthe Culpepper Rebellion against the requirement that all colonial goods be transported in British ships.He opposed SETH SOTHELl, one of the Lords Propietors who arrived to oversee the colonty.He was arrested and imprisoned.Sothel confiscated the 2,000 acres of Durant land.The Albemarle area rose in defense of Durant and banished Sothel from the area.
Deed Book A Perquimans NC:p. 71 "George Durant of Albemarle, Mariner-assigned to Hon'ble Seth SOTHEL, right of land aat a Creek called Lilley's Creek, which issueth out of Perq River" down sd River to Perq Point and along Sount side, "eastward of his now Cleared Ground by virtue of a certain writing of George CATCHMEYD, dated March 13, 1662, now upon Record" 200 acres Dec 20, 1687.At a Court at Capt WOOLARD'S Jan 6, 1689 090, John WINGATE Clerl, Test Wm WILKERSON, JOHN HARTLEY, JOHN DAVIS, HENDERSON WAOKER.This is the land George Durant deeded to Seth Sothel "unlawfully taken from him, whil in durance." One of the charges brought against Seth Sothel when he was impeached.
9,He was an attorney, Attorney General and Speaker for the House of Burgess of the Province of NC.He is credited as being "the father of North Carolina."The Family Bible is the oldest in NC and is housed in a special collection at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. North Carolina.Notes written in the margins give family member's birth and death dates. He keeps his title of Father of North Carolina even though an earlier deed was later found.Probably because Nathaniel Batts was such a retrobate, and did nothing to further the cause of liberty.

By 1675, there were 4000 settlers in 4 precincts: Perquimans, Pasquotank, Currituck and Chowan.
11.George Durant (along with CAPTAIN JOHN HECKLEFIRLD AND CAPTIN RICHARD SANDERSON) offered the use of his home for court to be held, council meetings and assemblies.Court was held so often at Durant's home, a set of stocks was eventually erected on hir property.
12.THE NAVIGATION ACTS:He was popular, with a reputation for fairness.By 1670, he had become the leader of the political party representing the interest of the orginal settlers.
He became increasingly in conflict with the Lords Proprietors, who were imposing restructive measure on trade.The new laws wsere art of a set of Bruitish laws, calle the Navigtion Acts.In these acts, all colonial trade had to be shipped on English ships and all European goods destined for the colonies had to first land in England.Certain items, such as tobacco from Carolina, could land oly in England.Heavy customs dues were paid in the British ports.
The result was in cutting off the Carolina trade from the New England market, Albemarle's prime trading partner.
Since the Acts precipitated smuggling to avoid the heavy customs duties in England, the PLATATION DUTY ACT, was passed in 1673.This stated colonial ships leaving port had to pay customs duties PRIOR to saiing.Parliament appointed customs officials in Albemarle to collect the duties.
13.DURANT IN LONDON.IN 1675, he presented his party's views to the Proprietors.He warned of troubles to come, but his comments were ignored.He sailed back to Albemarle aboard ZACHARIAH GILLIAM'S 5 gun ship, the "Carolina".

3.1st female to practice law in the colonies.
"This is the earliest known instance in NC that anye acted on behalf of some else in a NC Court" wrote Raymond A. Winslow, Perquimans Co archivist historian, describing Ann Marwood Durant's legacy
In one instance, Ann appeared in court on her onw behalf, asking tht money owed her from another estate be made.The court ordered the money to be paid to her husband, according to Raymond A. Winsloe. (This was before Married Women's Property acts were passed.)
She is honored by a marker at the intersection of NC 17 and state road 1800.The memorial was unveiled by representatives of the National Society of Colonial Dames.
The marker reads: " Ann Marwood Durant d. 1695-
First woman known to have acted as attorney in an NC Court, 1673.Appeared before Council in Perquimans Precinct."
