|As with many persons of a tri-racial genealogy, it is difficult if not impossible to trace ancestors.Much of my searchstarted with the Dawes Freedmen Rolls of the Chickasaw and Choctaw Nations, my Family's Surnames, have been preserved in written form to some extent. My ancestors were considered property of the Indians of these nations though many were also their parents. The Roberts and Stevensons and Colberts were owned by the Colberts and the Pickens by the Pickens.Seaching for PICKENS, ROBERTS, STEVENSON, COLBERT and others removed from Mississippi to Indian Territory|
Because Stepney's name is so unusal, my search has led me to the Morris Roberts Family from Wales,England>Henerico Co.>called Chesterfield Co., Va. The first Morris Roberts (there are three in this line) marriedElizabth Step.It is this researchers belief that there is a connection to this family.Information obtained fromPaul R,Sarrett.Jr posting to Worldconnect.genealogy.rootweb.come-mail : address firstname.lastname@example.org
I beleive Stepney's mother's may have been Rose from the Coast of Guinea owned by a John Turnbull and John Joyce in Spanish Louisiana. (From the Turnbull's will in 1800 list a 9 month baby Stepney. This will also names an illigitimate son by the name of William Turnbull.William Turnbull is also listed as a slave holder in the Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory after removal ).From the pages of Chickasaw Empire: The Story of the Colbert Family, by Don Martini, p. 8 "Colbert worked diligently to shape his Chickasaw braves and Tory volunteers into a viable force capabel of attacking both the Spanish and their American allies, and was supplied primarily by John Turnbull, an American Loyalist who had come from Nashville to the Chickasaw country" about 1780/81.I find a Stepney, age 19 years of yellow complextion on the manifest ofa slave ship (Georgiana) leaving New Orleans in Jan. of 1822 (about the same age and Location of Rose's baby). The owner is listed as Ruben Tankersly of Richmond cosigned to Abner Robinson of New Orleans.
