Notes for Nunzio Semeraro:
Nunzio, together with his wife Anna and their children Giuditta, Teresa, Cosimo and Martino, emigrated to the United States to join his daughter Elisabetta, who had earlier accompanied her husband Vitantonio Zizzi to West Virginia. The family sailed from Napoli on November 15, 1916, on the Re d'Italia, arriving in New York on December 10 that same year.Immigration officials detained the six Semeraros for a day before releasing them for fear that they were "likely to become public charges".Annina (Anna) Agnes Zizzi indicates that this was because Cosimo had respiratory problems.
Nunzio moved the family to West Virginia and labored in several mines in the northwestern part of the state. One tragic day, Nunzio's son Martino fell ill.Nunzio substituted for him in the mines that day but did not return alive, perishing instead when a tunnel collapsed.
