Everton's Data Easier Than Ever to Access
Family Pedigrees: Everton's Family File, Volume 1
(CD
12)
Reviewed by Marthe Arends

Family group sheets are often considered the meat-and-potatoes of genealogical forms: they are a standardized representation of a family with information about parents, children, and grandparents all on one page. Family group sheets include birth, death, and marriage event dates and locations, and their respective sources.

This CD contains the well known Everton's collection of over 23,000 family group sheets (more than 478,000 individuals!) featuring locations as diverse as the U.S., Denmark, Canada, England, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Prussia, Scotland, Sweden, and Switzerland. The dates listed on the family group sheets range from the 1400s to the present.

You'll not only find a fully searchable index, but the actual images of the family group sheets! If that doesn't sound exciting to you, consider this...most of the family group sheets have submitter's names and addresses included. All of the sheets give the date when the information was submitted as well.

You can search for a surname, event, year, location, and group sheet number as well. You may use wild cards to facilitate your search, and the index includes all of the individuals mentioned on a family group sheet.

As with other Genealogy.com image CDs, the images here allow you to make the decision as to what information is presented; although all of the images are very clear, the quality of handwriting varies. Image CDs are useful to researchers because they allow you to determine what information is represented in the scanned image and not rely on someone else's interpretation.

Searching, I found that the amount and quality of the information varied greatly. A few family group sheets were handwritten with just a name and date, while others were typed with almost every field filled in: occupations, residences, military service, full location citations, religions, other spouses, and even some sources.

My only caveat is a standard one: as with any other source of unverified information, the data found on this title should be used as a reference, and not as a final source of information. Some family group sheets contained here include lots of information with sources mentioned, others have brief information and no sources. Having the submitter's name and address can be helpful, but the burden of proof sits squarely upon you to verify or disprove the information you find.
