Fascinating Articles on Pennsylvania's Bygone Times
Egle's Notes and Queries of Pennsylvania, 1700s-1800s
(CD 19)
Reviewed by Marthe Arends

William Henry Egle's Notes and Queries began as a newspaper column in the Harrisburg Daily Telegraph between 1879 and 1895, then it was later published in five annual volumes between 1896 and 1900. Republished by the Genealogical Publishing Company as a twelve-volume set, the complete Notes and Queries features a wide variety of information for more than 109,000 individuals.

The information included in Notes and Queries originated in family histories, marriage, church, and tax records, tombstone inscriptions, and military records, but is not just limited to basic names and dates. Many fascinating articles on a variety of subjects relating to the times and people of the Pennsylvania area are included.

Browsing, I found articles on a number of subjects: biographies, town and area histories, correspondence, family records, histories of subjects (such as fire-proof buildings, the magnetic telegraph, etc.), court cases, church records, wills, obituaries, military records, births and marriages, and much more. The sample of subjects listed in the table of contents of the Third Series, Volume III, shows the wide scope of historical topics addressed in Notes and Queries:
