A Variety of Virginian Records
Genealogical Records: Virginia Land, Marriage, and Probate Records, 1639-1850
(CD 513)

by Marthe Arends

The data contained within this CD has its origins with the Palladium Interactive series of genealogy products; this title contains information found on six separate Palladium products, making it an excellent resource for Virginia researchers. The CD contains references to approximately 135,000 individuals mentioned in marriage records, deed abstracts, and wills from Spotsylvania County (deeds for 1722-1799), Augusta County (marriage records and bonds for 1700-1853), Augusta County (wills for 1743-1829), Isle of Wight County (wills for 1645-1853), and Norfolk County (wills for 1639-1856).

For marriage records, typically each record lists the surname, given name, role, year, date, bond date, notes. Also included is information about all individuals mentioned in the marriage record (spouse, minister, witness, bondsman): surname, given name, role, year. An example of a marriage record is:

John McAdams
Date: Jun 28, 1786
Record ID: 803
Description: Spouse
Bond Date: Jun 27, 1786
Remarks: Bride is the daughter of Samuel Blackwood.

This marriage record was originally published in Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia, 1745-1800. Extracted from the Original Court Records of Augusta County by Lyman Chalkley.

For land records, typically each record lists the individual's name, title, role, property, residence, year, book and page, date, prove date, and remarks. Also included is information about all individuals mentioned in the record (such as debtor, bondsman, administrator, witness, neighbor, grantor, grantee, attorney, family members): name, title, role, residence, and year. Source information is given when available. An example record:

January 5, 2000

This probate record was extracted from microfilmed copies of the original Will Book. According to the introduction, the information originated from Virginia County Records — Spotsylvania County, 1721-1800, Volume I edited by William Armstrong Crozier and Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia, 1745-1800. Extracted from the Original Court Records of Augusta County by Lyman Chalkley; while "the remaining records from Isle of Wight and Norfolk Counties were abstracted from microfilmed copies of the original Will Books." The fact that this data is accompanied by sources makes it a valuable resource for dedicated researchers, and is one I recommend without reservation.
