PONDER
Perryman Lafayette Ponder was buried wearing a tailor-made Confederate Captain’s uniform he bought many years after the Civil War. He volunteered and served in the 28th Regiment Alabama Infantry, attaining the rank of Captain.
The birth year recorded in family bibles for Perry and his twin brother, Berryman Shumate Ponder, is Sept. 27, 1839, a year earlier than recorded on his grave marker.
P. L. Ponder was the son of John Pierson Ponder (1818-1846), and Catherine Carter Pruitt (1823-1915). He married three times and was the father of 12 children, plus seven step-children from his second marriage.
