Rice Patterson (son of Thomas Patterson and Mary (Polly Jane ) Harvey)31 was born 25 Feb 1811 in Madison County(near Louisville, and died 15 Jan 1877 in Howard County, Missouri. He married Cordella Gentry Martin on 15 Apr 1838 in Howard County, Missouri, daughter of David Martin.

Moved from Madison County, Kentucky to Howard County Missouri
in 1817.
Marriage was performed and certified by Thomas Fristoe.
The couple united with th Baptist Church in Roanoke, Missouri
in 1855.
At early age became an apprentice in the trade of building Flat
Boats near Old Chariton.
Before age 21 he was hired to drive a team to Santa Fe, (then
Mexico) and made about 6 trips. He also became proficient in
speaking and writing the Spanish language while in Santa Fe
where he lived for approximately three years.
In 1844 he was employed by the United States Court of St. Louis
as an interpreter for a period of about 5 weeks during the
Chavis murder case.---
It appears that the Chavis fellow allegedly raided a wagon
train on the Santa Fe trail. He (Chavis) ambushed the train in
Kansas, was chased and captured in Texas, and tried In St.
Louis. (1876 atlas of Howard County,Missouri)
Mr. Patterson's father-in-law was David Martin who was an early
settler.Rice's half-brother was Major James Blythe of Kentucky,
and he was a cousin of William Gentry of Sedalia, Missouri.
The original name of the cemetery was the Rice Patterson
Cemetery and was later renamed the Patterson/Perrin Cemetery,
and is located at T52 R16 S9.
