This site documents the ancestors and decedents of Enoch Oliver Abell and Gertrude Green Abell who met in Atlanta, Georgia, married in 1939, and were the parents of four children (Enoch Howard, Ann Ernestine, Douglas Franklin and Susan Mary).
Enoch was born in or around Vincennes, Indiana in 1903 and Gertrude was born in Cornelia, Georgia in either 1917 or 1918. The exact year of her birth is unknown as there is no family document indicating her birth year. Also, any public record of her birth was lost due to a Habersham County Courthouse fire in the 1920's. Gertrude's older sister, Maude Green Carr Burrell was present at her birth. She attested that Gertrude was born in 1917 in order for Gertrude to obtain Social Security and Medicare Benefits.
In the late 1930’s Enoch was living with his sister, Alice Abell Craig and her husband, Frank Craig, at the corner of Hamilton Ave. and Boulevard in Southeast Atlanta. Gertrude was living a block away at 1070 Benteen Ave. with her parents. According to the family history, they first met at a restaurant operated by Gertrude’s sister Maude and her husband John Carr located on Boulevard, directly across the road from where Enoch was living. The rest, as is said, is history.
