The George W. Agnews of Columbus, Ohio

About Our Family Research


My side of family is comprised of Felix Agnew & Ann Boylan of Ireland, married in Cornwall, Connecticut in 1852 and settled in Norfolk,Connecticut, where the first of their children James B was born in 1853. 11 March 1856, John E Agnew (my grandfather)was born in Norfolk, CT. In 1857 the Agnews moved to Rossie, St. Lawrence Co. New York in 1858 their third child
Arthur was born. Felix Agnew entered Civil War in Union Army from New York in Sept. 1862. Felix was captured by the Rebel
Army in Sept 1864, died in prison near Richmond, VA on 21 Apr. 1865. Ann filed for widow's pension on July 1865 and pension
approved in 1867. Ann lived at Rossie, NY 1874, when she sold
house and moved to Housatanic, Massachusetts in 1875. She was
next found in Waterbury, CT in 1880 Census with her 3 sons.
on 16 Aug 1882, John E Agnew & Nellie Ellen Costello, daughter of John Costello & Catherine Donahue, both of Ireland, who had
settled in West Stockbridge, MA. John & Nellie were married in
Great Barrington, Berkshire Co. MA at Catholic Church. John & Nellie moved to Waterbury, CT to start their new life. Their
1st child Francis P was born in 27 Jul 1883. Anna Laura was
born on Jan 14 1885 and died 1 Dec 1886. Arthur Matthew (my father) was born on 27 Dec. 1886. George T was born 1 May 1891 and Edith Maria was born 16 Sept 1892. John E. died on 25 Oct
1892. Ann Agnew died 4 Sept 1899. Arthur graduated from Catholic High in 1905. Enlisted in US Navy 21 Apr 1911 and recieved medical discharge on 4 Mar 1913. Arthur stayed in
Waterbury, CT until his mother Nellie Ellen died 10 Dec 1923.
Arthur was next found in VA in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1929.
Appeared in 1930 US Census at Mountain Home, Johnson City, TN
in 1930. Arthur met Effie Mae Smith, daughter of William Lewis Smith (parents were Jacob Henry Smith & Nancy Jane Bennett. Nancy's parents were Perimenter M. Bennett (born in S.C. in 1807 and died in Springfield, MO in 1880) and Sarah E. Kelsey (Born in S.C. in 1808 and died in Springfield, MO in 1876). Effie mother's was Mary Emma Saults born in 17 Nov 1886 of
Andrew J. Salts & M Alice Whitaker, daughter of Jessie Whitaker
(1830-1909) and Sarah E. Engle (1834 - unknown). The Smith's,
Nancy J. Bennett, were from Greene Co. Tennessee. The Salts,
Whitakers,& Erwins were from Washington Co. Tennessee.
