About Our Family Research

I'm just starting out researching my family history. I don't have a ton of information on my family, but I would like to find out about it. The earliest date I have is 1880, my grandfather and after that all I have are names and speculations. Any help that anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Another part of our history that has been passed down is about an Alford couple
that was on a boat from England where the wife was pregnant and thought she
would have the children in America but she has them on the boat while they were on
thier way and she named on John Seaborn Alford and the other Seaborn John
Alford...it is unknown if this is a true story or not, but it may be useful. And i dont
know if those are the correct spellings. My aunt did tell me though that they thought
that is were the name Sebern was derived from.
