The McQueen-Richardson-Alkire-Lane-Lair Family Home Page

Updated June 4, 2001

Samuel McQueen, my 5th great-grandfather, was head of household by 3-Apr-1780 when he entered land on both sides of New River below the mouth of Pine Swamp and was granted 50 acres by Grant No. 701, dated 22-Sep-1785. Very likely, when Samuel first arrived in the region, it was all Rowan County, NC. In the earliest tax list of Wilkes County, dated 1787, Samuel is listed as head of household in Captain Vannoy's District. His oldest daughter, Gracie, was born at Shallow Ford of the Yadkin River. This was on the main road in colonial times, in what is now Yadkin County, but it was in Surry County when Gracie was born. Shortly before that date the region was in Rowan County. Samuel’s next born, William, was born in 1773 on North Fork of New River. He was one of the first citizens of that region, and was born in Surry County, which included at that time the northwestern 1/4 of North Carolina and had no western boundary, other than the edge of civilization. Samuel and wife, Hannah Dugger, (Julius Caesar Dugger?) were both born in 1750 on the Yadkin River, N.C. Samuel served in the Revolution under Col. Cleveland and participated in the King’s Mountain Campaign in 1780 under Benj. Greer. They later moved to what is now Johnson County, Tennessee. Samuel’s deeds can be found on Mary Floy Katzman’s Johnson County, Tennessee site at http://jctcuzins.com/.

The Alkire line is back to Michael born about 1753 and died in Hardy, Virginia and his wife, Catherine. The Ian Alkire/Carl E. Porter website www.alkire.org has some great information on many Alkire lines.

Jonathan Richardson was born about 1715 in Prince William, Virginia and married 1st Elizabeth and 2nd Anne. Jonathan and Elizabeth had three children: Joseph, William, and Mary. Jonathan and Anne (last name still not proven) had six children: Jesse, Thomas, Amos, Mary, Nancy, and Aimy. Jonathan’s will list only Joseph from his first marriage and all six children from his second marriage. William has been documented from Jesse, and Amos’s pension papers. I work closely with Bill Stamper and Rob Elliott on this line. Billy Stamper has researched this line extensively for many years and shared everything with me. Rob Elliott has supplied me with copies of our Richardson pension papers and other important documentation for this family. Dawn Ford Richardson copied all deeds, estates, etc. which started my genealogy interest.

William Bradford Lair’s line was researched by John A. Mahey and shared with me. Bradford Lair was born in 1775 in North Carolina and had moved to Wayne, Kentucky by 1812.

According to The Lane Family, The Descendants of Maj. Samuel Lane, Part II by Larry A. James in 1986. William Lane was born about 1469 in Orlybere, County Northampton, England. Richard Lane, great-grandson of William, embarked for the Eleuthera Island, Bahama, West Indies in 1632 (CALENDAR OF STATE PAPERS, COLONIAL SERIES 1574 TO 1660) where he later drowned. Rev. Tidence Lane, son of Richard and Sarah Fuller Lane, was born on 31 August 1724. Rev. Lane was the first pastor in Tennessee and has a church named after him and a large monument dedicated to him there. My Lane line migrated as follows: Maryland, North Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas, and to Missouri.

Some of the lines I am researching are: ALKIRE, ANDERSON, BISHOP, CABE, COMBS, DARST, DEATON, DUGGER, ENGLISH, GARRETT, GATEWOOD, GILBERT, HEATHMAN, LAIR, LANE, LONG, McQUEEN, MILLER, MILLION, NEW, NORTHCUTT, RICHARDSON, STUMP, WATSON, WILLS, and WOODARD. I have the Lane line back to 1469, the Combs line back to 1537, the Richardson line back to 1715, and the English line to 1689.

I would appreciate any assistance and will gladly share my information.
