The Altices/Alticks of Virginia

Updated May 18, 2006

About Our Family Research

When I started my family research in 1997, I was surprised to find cousins who had been researching the different family lines for over 30 years. I quickly learned that there are almost a dozen different spellings of the original surname of ALTIG, which is German.
Families that spell their last name as Altig, Altick, Altis, Altus, Alltus, Aultice, Altic and Altice are all related and trace their ancestry back to Johannes Franziskus Altig (John Altick) who arrived in America in 1749 as a one year old infant with his father Daniel.
Johannes and his wife Mary Simmons had 14 children who were either born in Maryland or Virginia. Johannes settled in Franklin Co, VA where he raised all of his children into adulthood. In 1818, he and most of his children moved to the Dayton, Ohio area.

Since 1997, I have been able to make contact with cousins some of whom have spent over 30 years working on the different family lines of Johannes Franziskus Altig. Most notable of these contacts has been Aileen Altis Brauer from Sedalia, MO. I have entered all of her family data contained in her Altick compilation into my genealogical program. Initially, she provided over 9,000 individuals. Most of the listings relate to the lines of Jacob and Daniel. However, she also shows some lineage from the other children of Johannes. Other researchers like, Carol Boykin, Carole Kopser, Greg Wall, Billy Lawrence Altice, William Curtis Altice, Becky Hilbert, Dorothy Lloyd, Linda Flattinger, Dr. Stephen Altic, Sally Keller, Dr. Theresa Altic Kestly, Donna Altic Hebets, Lois Altic Wilson, David Altic, Ronald Altic,Ron Lynn Altic, John Everett Altic, Adraine Smarr, Hildred Altice Smarr, Allan Ostler, Jerra Kemper, Diedre Altic, Ernest Altice, Deanie Aultice Rucker, Terry Altic, Tammy Altic, Robert Altic, Sherry Chenowith, Dawn Altice and her sons, Sue Altice, Vern Alltus, Jim Fish, Philip and Shirley Page Altick, Thalia Moyer Altice, Juanita (Jay) Altice French, John Stephen Altice, Shirley Altice Beecher, Mary Altice Southworth, Toni Altice, Geri Altice Monicke, Bruce Altice, Lorraine Chucinski Altice, Emily Harrison Stewart, Martha Lee Altice, Marsha Altice, Dana Marie Tilley, Sharon Campbell Irvin, Joyce Altice Sheridan, Barbara Jean Altice, Jim Altice, Ken Altice, Janet Altice Ross, Mike Altice, Dennis Altice, Horace Altice, Leah Janeen Altice, Clovice Altice, Nell Ross Altice Coleman, Herman George Altice, Jr., Mary Margaret Altice, Dr. Phyllis Hansell and many others whom I will add and give credit as I review my notes.

The search for the mysterious Henry Altig continues. There are hungreds of contemporary family members who still use the original family spelling...ALTIG. They all trace their lineage back to Henry Altig who first appeared in the 1800 census in Mason County, KY. There are various theories as to whom he is related...a late son of Daniel Altick who migrated from Schonau to America. Or he could be the son of Tillman Altick who was a Revolutionary soldier and is known to have lived in Berkley County Virginia. It is reported by some sources that Henry came to KY from VA.
My grandfather was Joseph Oat Altick and he was born in Boones' Mill, Franklin Co, VA. His birth certificate shows him listed as Altick, but there was evidently a pronouncment change in the late 1880's. In fact, this family is listed as ALTIS in the 1900 census.

My parents were William Miller and Margaret June Wilson Altice. I graduated from Williamson High School and Marshall University in Huntington, WVA.
