Searching in the Swamp

About Our Family Research

Most of the family I'm looking for were in the Old Barnwell District, or in Old Orangeburg District, or Colleton County, South Carolina. It was once a grand and beautiful, albeit wild and swampy, place to live. Most people know it these days as a good place to escape from. The families that are mine and that I'm hoping to find more information about are Harter (Herter), Sanders (Saunders), Ritter (Writter), Reid (Reed), Barker, Davis, Bessinger (Beesinger, Besinger),& Knight (Night). Also going farther back in the family lines are just about any name you come across in the census of one of these counties I've listed! I'm REALLY new at genealogy though I've been a "collector" of bits and pieces of family information for decades. Hoping to acquire the knack for researching and have already found out that those who do family research seem to be mostly a friendly and helpful bunch of people. I have 2 grands and am expecting 2 more, so I'm proud to be "in the middle" as it were, reaching out into the future as well as reaching back into the past to connect with the people whose reality came before mine.
