STREIGHTIFF AND VARIOUS SPELLINGS

Updated September 20, 2003

About Our Family Research

I STARTED RESEARCH IN 1964 FOR STREIGHTIFF'S. This is my mothers maiden name. I start with Jost Streithoff who came on the Ship St Andrew 9 Sept 1749. He settled in N.Codorus Twp. York Co.PA.
From a will dated 1756, Jost is the son-in-law and executor of the estate of John Nicholas Maak of Paradise Twp. York co. Johan had a brother Robert and a wife named Jacobina.Barbara Stryhof seemed to be acquiring land in 1775. She could be Jost's wife.
I believe (for lack of records) they had at least: Charles, Jesse, Jacob, Frantz/Francis, Catherine, William, and maybe Joseph, maybe John. More work to be done on this. In History of York Co Pa by Geo. R.Prowell lists in Captain Lechner's Co:,Jacob Straithof as a private and Franz as a fifer. The Pa archives lists them and a John a couple of times. It is my belief Jacob married Catharine "Cady" unknown maiden name, and moved to Franklin Co where he engaged in the Franklin Furnace and Forge. I saw them in the furnce books years ago but they have long disappeared.Jacob in 1800 had 4 males ch. under yrs, 1 male 10-16 and himself, he had a wife a 1 female child under 10 yrs.
York Co "Lischy's Reformed"ddchurch rec: Catharine d/o Jacob & Catharine b.18 Dec.1791, Jesse b. 26 Oct 1787, Sarah b 17 Jan 1789.Wills of Franklin Co. Letter of admin for Jacob Straithoff granted 11 Oct 1804, Letter of admin :Catherine Straitoof were 8 June 1819 , Charles executor. According to "Forbes Road Parnell's Knob to Burnt Cabins" by Harry Foreman, pg 28 the Straitiff family lived near the Old Road at "Sugar Camp" & another place high on the west slope of Mount Parnell. This is Franklin Co.Peters Twp. PA. My line along with Jacob (prob jr)
migrated to Blair Co. (then Huntingdon Co) about 1824. Moved around some in Blair And Huntingdon Co. d. 3 May 1878 in Penn township. His son William, had my gr-grandfather John Henry Straitiff, who had my grandfather Howar H. Streightiff who died in Ohio in 1962. Jacob and Ben (who I think is Charles oldest son) went to Armstrong and Jefferson Co.'s PA. I have a copy of Jacob's bible records and no Ben.. I do not have a copy of bible records on my Charles. Charles may have been married twice, in 1850 Elizabeth wass 46 and Charles 66 yrs. Their youngest daughter Matilda Kyler lists her mother's maiden name as Moore. Jacob married Elizabeth Barto. Some of Jacob, Ben and Charles's families went to Allegheny Co, Pittsburgh area.
Frantz/Francis was married 1 Nov 1796 to Catharine Klaycomb at Berkley Co.WVA., a Katharina was b. 15 Dec 1798 in Hagerstown MD. Johannes to Frantz 4 June 1789 wit John & Eva Streithof at West Manhein Twp, York Co. St. David ch.,and in 11 Aug, 1816 married Caty Miller in Berkley WVA. When he was in West VA he was arrested for being in a counterfiet ring with Valentine "Felty" Shockey. Where he is buried or any of his further children I don't have information on. In Henry Claycomb's will 7 June 1821 he states his daughter Mary Stritehofer. John Streithoff and Elizabeth had a daughter Anna Catarina born 15 Apr 1795 Sherman's (St.David)Union church, W. Manheim Twp. York co. PA. A Catheine Salyards was listed has having poor children in 1822,23,24 Blair County with her were
3 Salliards and 2 Straighthoofs Catharine 9 yrs, & Richard 6 yrs.
There was a Ludwick Strithoff/Streicholtz, 1799-1785 and Hessian soldier. He was a saddler. from "Return of the Pa Line entitled to donation lands reported by the late comptroller general volume 173 pg. 29. Pvt. Artillery Artifacts, commissary general of military stores and a sadler. What happened to him? He was brought over with the Hessian soldier. Relative?? could be.
THE VARIOUS SPELLINGS, STRAITIFF, STRATIFF, STRAIGHTHOOF, STREITHOF/F AND MANY MORE.I have found another article in Huntingdon newspaper 1820 declaring Joseph Straithoof a pauper.
Huntingdon newspaper John Barr married Caroline Straighthoof both of Blair co. July 21, 1854 newspaper. WHO is she?? her parents?
