In every generation, or sometimes skipping a few, there comes along a child who wants to know more, who is eager to know one's roots, and the swath of history it sweeps. To gather names and dates and locations from decades or hundreds of years enables me and mine to understand history in a new and personal approach. I owe it to my great-grandmother who kept her family history in a black metal "strong box."

I long to glean as many distant ancestors as possible, to mine the depths of high-tech archives to find my place, so that it may be a gift to generations after me.
