About Our Family Research

Researching James and Agnes Mason family of Fife Scotland, who
emigrated to US approx. 1850 and settled in Morrison, Whiteside
County IL. They had 7 children, five of whom, Margaret, Thomas,
James Bayne, Isabel and Robert, were born in Scotland. The younger two, John and Nancy Jane were born in IL. We think James Mason's parents were: Thomas and Isabel (nee Bayne) Mason, and Agnes Mason's parents were: Thomas Matthew and Margaret Thompson, all of Fife County Scotland.

James Bayne Mason (son of James and Agnes)and Mary Amelia Woolley had two children, Claude and Mabel. (Dr.) Claude W. Mason (son of James Bayne and Mary Amelia) married Anna Maria Andersson, from Sweden,in 1905. They had 6 children, five of whom, James Anders, Claude Theodore, Dorothea, Paul William (my father), and Anna Marie, were born in Chiengmai, Siam while Dr. and Mrs. Mason served as medical missionaries for the Presbyterian Church. Their last child, John, was born after they returned to Omaha NE.

My father, Paul William Mason (son of Claude and Anna Maria), married Pluma Lenore Downs, in 1931. They had four children:
Joyce Carol, Paul David (David),Dianne Downs, and Robert Arthur
(Bucky) Mason.

Also researching the Myers family, George and Elizabeth (nee Huett) from Augusta county Virginia and descendents,Lenora Myers Potter born Augusta County 1863, and her daughter Nellie Potter born 1887. Nellie Potter married Arthur Levi Downs in 1909 and had: Ruth, Pluma Lenore (my mother), Arthur, Robert, Virginia, and Jean. Family history has it that the Myers were plantation owners of 'substantial' means outside of Roanoke Va. The records show however, that George and Elizabeth, and daughter Lenora (Nora) were all from Augusta county which was some 80 miles north of Roanoke. Cannot find any records substantiating this 'plantation' story, but continue to search.

We would like to gather some information about the Andrews(my husband's) side of the family. Looking for information about George Edward Clarence Andrews, born Oct 12 1909 in Newfoundland. George was the youngest child and had three sisters; Marge, Gwen, and Edith. His mother's given name was Jesse and her maiden name is unknown. We know nothing about his father. He may have been a minister. Jesse's 2nd husband's surname was Mundy. George grew up in Canada. Married Esther Rachel Rose of Red Oak, IA, approx.1944 in IL. Three children, Peter Spencer (Pete), George (Geordie) Churchill, and Wendy Louise.

  • Mystery tin-type - Who ARE these people? (80 KB)
Are these Masons? Woolleys? Anderssons ? A Downs family portrait? Potters? Huetts perhaps? Only thing we know for certain is they are not Andrewses! Appears to be approx. 1860-Civil War era perhaps or shortly thereafter. Any ideas? A mother and her two children? An older sister with younger brother and younger sister to each side?
