Around 1850 William Wells (probably with middle initial “A”) came from either Virginian or North Carolina to Choctaw or Perry County, Alabama. In Perry County he married Eliza (Liza) Rutledge on September 18, 1854. On September 9, 1855, this marriage produced a son, William A. What the “A” stands for is unclear; however, a son in the next generation was named “Walter Alfonso”, thus that name is a good possibility. In 1861 or 1862, the elder William joined the 29th Alabama Infantry in Montgomery and was assigned to Company I as a private. The 29th was an artillery and infantry unit.
