Carl graduated from Cushing High School in 1932. He attended St. Paul Business College for two years, worked out as a farm hand, and picked corn at Tekamah in the fall of 1937 and 1938.

Carl and Doris were married in the Presbyterian Church at St. Paul. They started farming on a farm east of Elba where they retired from, sice retirement moved to a home in St. Paul. Carl served a three year term on the St. Paul school board, received the Distinguished Farmer Award in 1961, has been a director of Twin Loups Reclamation Board for over thirty years.
