Carl (Johnson) Johansson (son of Johannes Abrahamsson Brandt and Stina Ottosdotter) was born 27 Nov 1825 in Jarsnas Parish in (Jonkoping county) Sweden, and died 19 Jan 1891 in Cushing (Howard county), Nebraska. He married Sophia Johansdotter on 07 Mar 1849 in Jonkoping county, Sweden, daughter of Johannes Mansson and Infrid Helena (Lena) Arvidsdotter.

Carl Johansson (Carl Johnson) was listed as a farmer. The family first lived in Stenkvill in Skede Parish. They moved about 1851 to Hults Parish in Jonkoping County where they lived at Smedhems Mill, It had belonged to Sophia's father and now belonged to her brother Carl Johan. They moved back to Skede in 1855 then to Mellby Parish in 1856 where they lived at Mastorp where Catharina Wilhelmina was born. On March 14 1863, they moved to Oland. They evidently lived in Tavelsrum #3 in Torslunda Parish until they imigrated to America.

Swedish population explosion after 1845 and crop failures in the 1860's led to much of the immigration to America. Carl and his son, Frans August, came to America around 1876 as noted on census records. They are said to have been at Red Oak, Iowa for a time. Emma Miller (Frans August's Daughter) related that they worked as railroad laborers to earn money to bring the family to America. They often walked and slep in haystacks to save money.

The where abouts of Carl and Frans is unknow until the early 1880's. Carl and Frans August received their citizenship papers 15 April, 1883 at St. Paul, Nebraska. Peter Ahlberg and Paul Anderson were their witnesses. Carl homested the east half of the southwest quarter and the west half of the south east quarter in section 10 township 16 range 10 in Howard County. The patent was signed 1 October 1883 by President Chester A Arthur. Carl was living there when he sent for Sophia and the four youngest children, Julia, Louisa, Carl (also called Charlie) and John. Swedish records show that the family left Sweden on 15 May, 1883.

On June 1885 as part of the Nebraska census, the Karl Jonson family is found in the St. Paul Preinct of Howard County, as follows--Jonson, Karl age 60 farmer born in Sweden, Sophia age 57, wife/house keeper, born in Sweden,Ana L. age 21 daughter, born in Sweden, Karl age 19, son, born in Sweden, Uhan age 16, son, born in Sweden.
Karl owned the land, 100 acres tilled, 30 acres of meadow and 110 acres unimproved. 10 acres of grassland was mown and 16 acres was in hay. the farm, fences and buildings were valued at $4500. plus $200. in machinery and implements, $675 in livestock and $150. for the cost of building and repairing fences. The estimated value of all farm productions was $50.. He had 4 horses, 1 or 2 milk cows plus 2 other cows, 35 swine and 20 poultry. They produced 300 pounds of butter and 100 dozen eggs the last year. He had been hailed out loosing 5 acres of barley, 50 acres Indian corn, 10 acres oats, 30 acres wheat and 1 acre of potatoes.

By 19 January 1886 Carl and wife owned 400 acres in section 10 Township 16 Range 10, which they sold to Christopher Crow and Sachary Leftwich for $4800.00. There were mortgages on this land. The deed to the millsite as Cascade was dated 19 January 1886 and was filed 8 March 1886. Carl Johnson bought it from Crow and Leftwich for $4500.00. The mill sat on the west side of Spring Creek just west of where Cusning Nebraska would be located later. It contained 10 acres in Section 5 Township 15 Range 9. It was a water powered grist mill of the type built in the 1870's. Clifford Jensen related that it was powered by a wheel that lay in the creek bed rather than an upright wheel. The mill house itself was a wooden building and it was said that in later years the wood from this building was used to construct the town hall in Cushing. The stones were seen next to the creek for many years.

On 1 March 1886 (filed 8 March 1886) Carl Johnson bought the east half of the NW quarter of section 5 township 15 Range 9 for $800. This is where they were living when the 1886 school census was taken. Carl's son's, Carl age 20 and John age 17 were listed among school age dependants in the home.
