Sophia Johansdotter (daughter of Johannes Mansson and Infrid Helena (Lena) Arvidsdotter) was born 14 Jun 1828 in Hults Parish (Jonkoping county) Sweden, and died 20 May 1915 in Cushing (Howard county), Nebraska. She married Carl (Johnson) Johansson on 07 Mar 1849 in Jonkoping county, Sweden, son of Johannes Abrahamsson Brandt and Stina Ottosdotter.

April 2, 1887 the Lincoln and Black Hills Railroad Co., obtained the right of way for a 100 foot wide strip of ground in the east half of the NW quarter of Section 5 Township 15 Tange 9. Carl and Sofia both made their marks on the deed and received $100. for the strip of ground. With the railroad being built the new settlement of Cushing grew up and by 1888 The Mill's address was changed from Cascade to Cushing.

Carl died 19 January 1891. He was buried 4 miles northwest of Cushing in the Spring Creek Cemetery. He died intestate.Sofia petitioned for the homestead to be tranferred to Carl's heirs including Sofia and their 9 children. The homestead consisted of 90 acres in Section 5 Township 15 Range 9 including the 10 acte mill site. This land had been mortgaged to Omaha Loan and Trust Company on 15 January 1887 for $1000 at 6% interest, payable five years later in 1892. Carl's estate included farm animals and farm equipment valued at $542.

On 25 October 1894 an action of foreclosure was taken by Omaha Loan and Trust Co. On 22 October 1895 the acres was sold by Sheriff W. W. Kendall to Omaha Loan and Trust for $1900.

Sofia lived with her son, John north of Cushing. On the 1900 census record John was considered the head of the household. He owned the land and it was mortgaged, SW part of Section 32 Township 16 Range 9. Sofia never learned to read or speak English but she did sign her own name in 1891.

Sofia had a partnership with Peter Olstad. According to Emma Miller, Peter and Julia lived on her farm with her. In July 1912 when she was 84, Charles Holm was appointed as her guardian to manage her property. In her will Sofia named her grandson, Fred Anderson, as executor. At the time of her death she owned the Southwest Quarter of Section 32, Township 16 Range 9. Wheneverything was liquidated there was $4028.43. A $1000.00 legacy was given to her oldest son, F. A. Carlson and the remainder was to be divided among her 8 children or their heirs. Sofia is buried beside her son, John. In the Fairdale Cemetery with both names on one stone.
