John Hawkins Arnold (Jack)and Mordecai Roberts Arnold (Mordie)were married in Mobile, Alabama 1 June 1916. Jack had hoboed to Mobile from Waxahachie, Texas, and was foreman on the Carrol Plantation at Theodore. Mordie was the school teacher in the one-room school house on the plantation. They met in April 1916, married 1 June 1916. Shortly after their marriage Jack, nearly blind in one eye,and unable to enlist for service in World War I, took a job as a welder in the Ford plant in Flint, Michigan, making military vehicles. Claude and Sue(Jacquelin) were born there. The couple moved to Tyler, Texas, after the end of WW I where Jack worked on Aunt Dee (Jack's sister) and Uncle Bunn Hey's dairy farm. Pat, Mawk (Mordecai) and Grace were born there. The family moved from Texas to Alabama in 1929. Mary Emma (Memmy), Elsie ,Jody (Joan Hawkins) were born in Mobile, BayMinette and Fairhope, respectively. Jack and Mordie lived the final years of their lives in Fairhope, Alabama. They had eight children:
