I am currently trying to trace our American Indian ancestry which comes from my grandfathers family on my mothers side. We have very little information about it, we know that my great grandfather was a full blooded Indian from somewhere in the "upstate New York" area, he fled to an island off the coast of new york after killing the man who was having an affair with his wife. He boarded the first ship that arrived which was a whaling vessel bound for Bay of islands, New Zealand. He met my great grandmother and married her taking her surname (which was cook) and changing his first name to Marcellis. He would not talk of his past in the US and so far we know of no recorded information about him. We also know that we can trace our family name (Cook) directly back to Captain James Cook who discovered New Zealand.
