I am just starting out on this voyage and am looking for information about ancestors of my paternal grandparents, Jack Astles (b.1900, d.1981) and Bessie Rayner (b.1900, d.1981). Jack and Bessie were married in Knutsford in 1924. It is believed that Bessie changed the spelling of our surname from Astle because she thought that adding the final 's' made it sound nicer.
Jack and Bessie had three sons, Bert, who died in 1995, John Rayner (known as Ray) and Thomas.
Ray Astles married Florence Eileen Eastwood (known as Eileen)in 1953. They still live in Knutsford, have four grown up children, two grandchildren and one great grandchild:
John, the eldest child, is a farm labourer and has one son, Simon. John lives in Knutsford; Simon lives in the Merseyside area. Simon also has a son, Casey, born in 1999.
Christine, the eldest daughter married Peter Birkenhead in 2000. They have a daughter, Chloe Elizabeth (b.1997); Peter has 2 sons, Chris and Paul, from a previous marriage. Sadly Peter passed away unexpectedly in 2005.
The middle daughter is Lynda. She lives in Edinburgh and works in retail security.
The youngest is Janette. She also lives in Edinburgh and is a nurse.
Thomas Astles is a retired widower with two children, Anne and Peter. Tom's wife Margaret died 20 years ago.
