A young female slave, Lizzie Bachus (parents are reported to be part African American and part Indian) was sold to a white DeSoto County Mississippi - sometime during the mid 1840's. Lizzie gave birth to three sone, Andrew (sept 1847), George (1854) and Henderson (Hence- 15 Oct 1858), and one daughter, Ophelia (1865). Through the years, verbal accounts indicate that they were fathered by a white slave master, a "mr. Yates".
It is more likeyl that the noted Julius Caesar Nichols Robertson and/or his son John owned Lizzie. A review of the records indicate that George C. Yates lived in Maryland in 1860 with his parents. George moved to Hernando and married Elizabeth Robertson in 1867. John Robertson [aka "Jack"] married Susan Oliver in 1849. The Robertson's were one of the largest slave owners in De Soto County. The area around Love Station was known as "Slave Town". Robertson Gin Road is named after this family.
This website is dedicated to the seven generations of The Bachus-Bachus-Backus Family and answering the question: What happened to Lizzie? - and to the research and preservation of the history of the Family for future generations.
