Includes NotesNotes for Lewis Sr (Old Lewis) Piatt:
Notes from Margie Mercer, dated Jan. 2, 2000....... "Now in 1820, Lewis Piatt Sr., father, had in the home..... a female 26 to 45, a male 45+, a male 16 to 26, a female 10 to 16, and female 0 to 10 and a female 0 to 5."

"In 1830 Lewis Sr. had the following in his household...." Lewis, age 60 to 70; female age 40 to 50; female 20 to 30; female 125 to 20; female 10 to 15; male 5 to 10; and female 0 to 5."

Following info. is from Marge Mercer on March 29, 2000 via an e-mail message.........

"Sharon, I have a letter here that I received some time ago. The man who sent it is one of many Piatts searching. His conclusion and he backs this up is that Lewis when applied (Old Lewis) in Court was asked about his birth date. He replied that according to his father's family Bible record it was April 1766 -- in Westchester Co., N.Y. Then when asked where he had lived since the Revolution, he described moving to Sussex Co., N.J., where he resided about a year before moving to Westmoreland Co., PA., and thence to Ohio Co., Virginia. He lived for several years in Westmoreland and 18 to 20 years in Ohio Co., before pushing into Adams Co., Ohio. He married Catherine McHenry on February 1, 1791, and she died the first day of March in 1820."
" The information I have states that Old Lewis was probably the son of Daniel Piatt and Sarah. This information states that in Orcutt's History of Stratford, Conn., on page 1265, the Name "Lewis" was first injected into the Clan by Daniel and Sarah (?) Peet, Peat or Piatt, Pyatt and so on. If this is so, it could account for Daniel in Sussex Co., or just across the line in N.Y. Lewis's father Daniel (of the above line, was James Piatt and his mother was Sarah Osborn."
"In this paper it was mentioned that a Major Daniel Piatts's son, John D. Piatt, was age ten when he marched with his father to Canada from N.J., in 1776. He was a fifer and drummer and so that account for your John D. Piatt that you mentioned today."
"Sharon, I do not know if this Major Daniel and Daniel were one and the same of not....Perhaps."
"Anyway, the man who had this information wrote this back in August of 1972 and he had no e-mail address. If you want the address I can send it along to you. In fact, if you want the copies of these papers, I will have copies made and send them along to you. (6 pages)."
(I will not have Margie send these papers to me....She has them. slc, 3-29-00.

"This is only my view on these Census records and must not be taken for actual fact............."

"This Lewis Sr. Piatt was 13 years old when he entered the service in the Revolution. He first entered service in April 1779 at Longridge, Westchester Co., New York, in the company of Capt. Ayers, in the Regiment of Col. Comstock for 9 months. This company served as a scouting party for the Flying Camp. Lewis Sr. was discharged in June 1781, and entered as a substitute for one Olds, at Fort Waterbury, Ct., in the company of Capt. Granger. The company was attacked next day by the British, who retreated, losing two men in the tide. In June 1782, he entered service as a volunteer under Lieut. Mosier, who commanded a scouting party of 32 men, at Westchester, New York. They were attacked by 300 men of Delancey's command. In this attacking party was Col. Holmes, a deserter, a former militia officer who received his death from the fire of a Negro man that had formerly belonged to him. Lewis Piatt was wounded in the left hip by a musket ball in this skirmish in July 1782, when he was discharged. He served in all about 30 months. He lived in Westchester County four or five months after the Revolution, then he removed to Sussex Co., New Jersey for one year. He then removed to Westmoreland Co., PA., where he met and married Catherine McHenry. He next went to Ohio County, West Virginia, remaining there 18 to 20 years and then came to Adams County, Ohio. In September 1844, while residing in Jefferson township, he applied for a pension. He signed his own name, spelling it Piatt. But he sometimes spelled it Peyett. The name is also sometimes spelled Pyatt. His son John said that Lewis Sr. died October 6, 1851.
