BIOGRAPHY: From HISTORY OF MADISON CO, NY, 1872 by Mrs. Hammond, p.590: re: Richard Baker's wife, Frances'(gr.) father; "Israel Rice came from Worcestern Mass. in 1795 and bought in the east part of the town (Madison), where now his son, Francis Rice, Resides, Lot No. 32." Mr. Rice was a bootmaker in Hamilton.

"Richard Matteson Baker was born in the village of Clinton, Oneida County, on July 29, 1842, and was a son of Rev. Matteson Baker, a well known Methodist clergyman. At an early age he removed to Utica where his father published a temperance paper known as the Washington News.
