BIRTH: NORTHERN NEW YORK, Vol.III Lewis Historical Pub.Co. (J.Pitcher 10-93) Birth date from H.Lee Baker, abt 1666
SPOUSE: ANCESTRY OF SIMON BAKER, p. 25. "Benjamin Baker was married at N.Kingstown, Washington, R.I. by William Hall, Justice, 18--, 1704/5 to Mercy HA--. The N.Kingstown records were badly damaged on the night of 16 Dec 1870 when thieves tried to break into the First National Bank of Wickford where they (the records) were stored and the thieves set the building on fire to cover their tracks. The records have been repaired as far as possible but the edge of the pages is unreadable. The last of Mercy's surname was burned off. According to the family records, the wife of Benjamin Baker has thought to be Mary H---, or Ha--, rather than Mercy. THE BAKER GENEALOGY, of 1910 gives her as Mary H.Mrs Cotrell of Buskirk NY, a genealogist belonging to the NY branch of the Baker family, claims that according to family records the name is Mary Hall. Recently however a photographic copy of the North Kingstown town records has been secured and the name turns out to be definitely Mary Ha--. In the Pierce Manuscript, Deed Abstracts of N. Kingstown, Benjamin Baker's wife is mentioned three times as Mercy and once as Mary. Mercy may have been known by either name. The Hall family has been investigated and only one Mary remains as a possibility b. at Portsmouth, RI 24 Sept 1679, dau. of Wm. Hall and Alice Tripp. The name DINAH in the Havens family also appears as a child and grandchild of Benjamin and Mercy Ha-- and could be a family name carried down, providing his wife was a Havens rather than Hall."
