Esther Thompson was the dau of Thomas Thompson who came from London to Hartford. Thomas Thompson's wife Ann and mother of Esther was the dau of Gov.Thomas Wells of CT. Samuel Gridley and Esther T. were m. 12/21680. Following her death, Samuel m. Mary Humphrey 12/1/1698. Following Samuel's death prior to May 5, 1712, Mary Humphrey Gridley m. John Wadsworth on 9/14/1714. Samuel's children by Esther were: Samuel 1764 m. Ruth Lewis 1710, d. 1714; Thomas b. 1675-79 m. Hanna Wilcoxson 10/31/1704; John, bap. 1/29/1781-2 m.Dorothy Benton 1717, d. 1740; Mary, b. 1717, Evans, Mercy b. 1719 Mandross; Joseph b. 3/8/1784-5 m. Hannah Lewis abt. 1713.
Samuel and his brother Thomas were together in business in Farmington running a blacksmith shop and general store. Thomas was known as 'smithy' and Samuel and 'the Merchant". Following his death May 1712, Samuel's inventory, June 2, 1712 was valued at 775#0s7p.
Especially noteworthy among Samuel's descendents is his son Hezekiah (1701-76) by his second wife, Mary Humphrey. H. was appointed the first Judge of Probate in Bristol in 1753 and Chairman of the War Comm. for CT during the Revolution. (more decendents listed)
