New Jersey Barge Family

Updated November 9, 2000

About Our Family Research

Starting research on the branch of the Barge family which came to the United States in 1893.

In a letter dated October 23, 1980, my great-uncle, William F. Barge wrote:

"On the paternal side -- in 1590 there was an Earldom in England near the Scottish border. The estate was primarily used to raise sheep and seems to have stayed in the family until modern times. However, this must have been lost due to taxes."

He goes on to say there were three brothers (I would guess circa 1850's), one of whome was my great-great-grandfather. One brother was commissioned by the English government to go to Australia to teach them the technique of raising Merino Sheep. One brother went to South Carolina, and the third brother went to Germany. This is my branch of the Barge family.

My great-uncle died a few years ago, so I do not have any more information than this.
