Gilbert Beaune first arrived in Canada in the early 1600s. There has been 13 generations of Beaunes (now spelled Beaulne) in Canada and I am sure the 14th generation may be out there somewhere.
One of the major confusions I have had is with respect to the family name Beaulne. Why did the "L" get inserted. The other major issue is what does the name mean. Most french names that begin with "Beau" refer to a place or some feature of a place.
Examples: Beaulieu Beaubassin Beaubien Beauchemin Beaudoin Beaulieu Beaumarchais Beaumont Beausoleil
When I visted France in 2005 I was able to find two cities that had the name Beaulne and Beaune. Beaulne was in the north east of France near Laon. It was a small town and its full name was Vendresse-Beaulne. The city without the "L", Beaune was in the south of France near Lyon.
If anyone can help me to understand 1) the meaning of the name and 2) why the "L" was added or maybe it was removed.
