Margaret BOGGIO was born 18 September 1903 in Dunkirk, Crawford, Kansas, and died 07 June 1988 in Girard, Crawford, Kansas. She married George `Hook' GILLARD on 03 November 1921 in Girard, Crawford, Kansas, son of William Broom `Doc' GILLARD and Margaret BELL.

Margaret 'Maggie' Gillard Whetstone

Girard--Margaret "Maggie" Gillard Whetstone, 84, died at the family home about 8:15 a.m. Tuesday, July 7, 1988.
She had been in failing health for the past two years.

She was born Sept. 18, 1903, to Antone and Lucy Grosso Boggio.

She was married to George Gillard on Nov. 3, 1921, and he died in July of 1944. She later married Hilton Whetstone
on Dec. 17, 1955, at Lamar, Mo. He survives.

She was baptized a Catholic at St. Mary's Church in Pittsburg. As a teenager, Margaret Whetstone worked for the
Appeal to Reason at Girard. After the death of her husband in 1944, she went on to start a number of businesses
in the Girard vicinity, beginning with a rooming house with an attached restaurant in 1944. Later this expanded to
a boarding house at the corner of St. John and Summit streets in Girard. In 1952, the boarding house was expanded
to be one of the first homes for the aged in the area. By 1968, with the help of her husband, Hilton Whetstone, this
business had expanded to caring for 74 adults in four different facilities. In July of 1968, she began the present-day
Heritage Professional Nursing and Health Care Center, which continues to care for residents in Girard and the
surrounding communities.

After retiring from the health-care business in the early 1970's she and her husband began Whetstone Rentals, which
included over 35 apartments. She continued to manage these until the last two years, when she retired because of failing
health.

She is survived by three sons, George Gillard Jr., Stillwell, Kan., Dennis "Big" Gillard, Kearney, Mo., Donnis "Little"
Gillard, Girard; one daughter, Wilma Twarog of Girard; two nieces raised in the home, Louise Roby of Plainfield, Ill.,
and Lucille Capparelli of Henderson, Nev.; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, two brothers and three sisters.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the First Christian Church in Girard. The Rev. Wesley Ward will officiate. Burial will
be in the Girard Cemetery. The family will receive friends 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home,
Girard.
