Bjermeland

About Our Family Research


Bjermeland is my father's family name, which derives from the family farm in Vestnes, at Tresfjord, in the province of Møre og Romsdal, Norway.

There is a strong possibility that the name originally was Bjarmeland, and then changed to Bjermeland, like many other Norwegian names that changed the vowel from a to e.

Bjarmeland was the name of the land at the White Sea in Russia. Bjarmeland appears often in the sagas, as the name of the land in the north-western Russia,inhabited by the bjarmer, a Karelian (Caucasian) people.
