Bjermeland is my father's family name, which derives from the family farm in Vestnes, at Tresfjord, in the province of Møre og Romsdal, Norway.
There is a strong possibility that the name originally was Bjarmeland, and then changed to Bjermeland, like many other Norwegian names that changed the vowel from a to e.
Bjarmeland was the name of the land at the White Sea in Russia. Bjarmeland appears often in the sagas, as the name of the land in the north-western Russia,inhabited by the bjarmer, a Karelian (Caucasian) people. It is mentioned i.a. in Heimskringla - see map by clicking on the Related Link below.
