Blochlinger, Blöchli(n)ger, Blöchinger, Blocklinger Families

About Our Family Research

Blochlinger families settled in the region of the County of Uznach for more than 500 years. A famous local historian named Johann Ulrich Custor researched the origins of familiy names of the County of Uznach in a source called "Chronik der Grafschaft Uznach" as far back as 1770 (!). He notes, the first record of the name "Blochlinger" appeared in 1459 "zu Ricken" (a village and a mountain pass to the Toggenburg valley close to Uznach). Countless entries in the "Church books" register the births from 1609 onwards in Uznach and neighbouring communities. In the Glückshafenrodel of Zurich 1504 an "Uelrich Blöchinger from Uznach" and a "Cleinhans Blöchinger" is registered. In 1803 Napoleon consented to the creation of the Canton of St. Gallen. Civil rights were introduced and every citizen was registered in the State's family registers. The author's own lineage can be traced back (up until now ;-) only down to Johann Caspar Bloechliger, born around 1720-23 who married Maria Anna Walliser on February 9th, 1779 in the church of St.Antoni, Uznach. Johann Caspar died 1785 and the widow M.Anna Walliser married one of the Eichmann sons of the Hofmühle (another family from Ernetschwil with extensive genealogic research published in book form!). They lived "im Schlatt" as farmers in Ernetschwil, a small village just above Uznach. Very early documents owned by the monastery of St.Gallen mention a farm domain in Ernetschwil named the "St.Johanner Höfe" which also has links to our family. The author's great-grandfather Josef Kaspar Gottlieb 1837-1916 purchased the lower part of the St.Johann farm (Der untere Hof) and one of his descendants is still farming on it to this very day. Church registers start to write the name with an "n" (Blöchlinger) around 1808 in Goldingen and later on also in St.Gallenkappel for unknown reasons. Was it just fashionable or was this done to differentiate the various family branches? This remains a mystery to me. Should you have any information on Blochlinger immigrants to the USA (around 1840 - 1870) or just searching for missing links in your family lineage please contact the author. I may be able to help you from my previous research experiences. Please e-mail me at the address below. Thank you for your interest in our family history.
