| About Our Family Research |
|
I started my family history research quite by accident. While cleaning out some old papers that had been found in a trunk after my Gran died, my mother & I found a piece of paper, folded many times. Upon opening it, we discovered a Civil War discharge paper for a familiar surname but the given name was not one we had heard in connection to our family. Why had this been saved for so many years? And did it belong to an ancestor? So began the search, and little did I realize what this initial search would grow into. In the past year or so, I have managed to connect with many "cousins" that I had never heard of, and to form many new friendships I would have missed out on had I not begun this search. The paper turned out to be the discharge papers of my great, great grandfather. He had died when my great grandmother was just three. Her mother had died when she was only 18 months old. She had been raised by an aunt and uncle and they were referred to as her parents and she is even named in their will as "daughter". I have followed many paths since this first mystery confronted me, and I have looked into many family lines. I can see now that this search will never be truly over, and I can look forward to many satisfying years of genealogy.
