Tence (a.k.a.Tennie) and Julia(a.k.a.Julie) were born in Etowah County in Northeast Alabama in small communities on Sand Mountain near Sardis. Tence was born on March 3,1889 on his family homestead in the Smith Institute community which was named for a nearby school. Oct. 21, 1892 Julie was born in the nearby Whitesboro community. They were married on September 20, 1908. They reared their ten children on the Hill family homestead and worked the farm there surviving two world wars and the Great Depression. The Hill family was well known in their community for their Christian home, music and their generosity to their neighbors and strangers alike. Sometime after Tence's death in 1944, Julie moved to Gadsden, Alabama where she lived until her death 1976. Their graves are in the Smith's Chapel Cemetary near Sardis, Al.
