Godfrey Sperling was a farmer near the Harz mountain range of Sazony Prussia until he sailed in 1850 from Hamburg on the Brig Elbe, with Captain F. A. Heydtmann, with his wife, Christine Baller, and his two sons, John August Frederick (13) and Henrich Frederick August (11). They traveled to Sheyboygan WI, where they farmed until 1860.they both voleentered in the WE infantry during the Civil War. Soon after they moved to East Bend Township, Urbana Illinois. There they carved farms from wilderness and became well respected members of thier community.
