MARY EVELYN ALLEN BOX AND HER ANCESTORS

Updated November 9, 2000

About Our Family Research

I am researching the following families: Fortner, Harp, Sims, Herndon, and Allen. The Sims line has been established to the
Revolution, and I am a member of the Daughters of American Colonists. If anyone has information on this line before 1775, I would like to hear from you. This family may have lived in
Pennsylvania prior to South Carolina.

The Harps can be traced to South Carolina, Chesterfield County, in the 1850's. They came to Indiana about 1865. Thomas Harp was a Confederate soldier and had three sons: Nathan, John, and M. C.

Robert Scott Herndon joined the Confederate forces at Poplar Bluff, Ky. at the age of 14. He was captured 30 days later at the battle of Perrysville. Although the records show he deserted, I have obtained a copy from the National Archives that he was captured and taken to Camp Chase, Ohio. He later came to Indiana with his wife, Ann Steger, daughter of Hales Steger. She died at the age of 37. Scott remarried and moved to Vevay, IN where he is buried in the Vevay cemetery, but there is no stone. I do have a death certificate.

The Fortners came to Indiana from Kentucky. They received land grants in Martin County prior to 1825. At least three generations are buried in Salem Cemetery, Martin County. I would like to find location and ancestors in Kentucky.

The Allens came to Indiana from North Carolina. They were living in Owen County, Washington Twp., Spencer, Indiana in 1850. The oldest ancestor I can document is Jesse Allen. Does anyone have information on this family. I believe his mother's name was Elizabeth.

Thanks to anyone for any information on these families.
