About Our Family Research

I have a reasonable knowledge of my family's history but it is rather topsy turvy and unorganised and presently lives in an old trunk. My Metcalfes arrived in New York shortly previous to the American Revolution in the form of Simon Metcalfe of Richmond, York, England. Simon was a seafarer and was killed in The Sandwich Islands around 1789 with two of his sons. His third son George Metcalfe married the daughter of Silas Talbot, another Sea Captain and Revolutionary hero, in New York I am a direct descendant of that marraige. The Lawtons and Maybanks are early settlers of Charleston, South Carolina. I know very little about the McCullaghs who moved from Jersey City, N.J. in the early 1900's. I also know little of my father's family the Boyd's of Lebanon, Tenn. and the Schneiders who were more recent immigrants to the U.S. around the 1850's, I think, from Germany
