Hi, my name is JAN BOYLEN, I have been researching the FRISKNEY an FRESHNEY names since 1990 and have a large database of these names worldwide. I organise a family gathering every two years, our next one will be August 2003 in SALTFLEET LINCOLNSHIRE.
I also produce a newsletter 4 times a year - subscription £5 When asking for information, please always enclose a stamped addressed envelope or you can e-mail me on janboylen@hotmail.com
The database covers all members of the surname from 1115 to the present - we have two main lines - one back to East Torrington in the early 1500's and the other which can trace the lineage through knights to Edward 1 King of England. The database is constantly changing and expanding on a daily basis, and with your help we will put those missing jigsaw pieces together. If you have any information you would like to share, do let me know, never make the mistake of thinking 'Oh he will already have that information', I would rather receive the information a 100 times than not receive it at all.
Based on the National Burial Index which is produced by the Federation of Family History Societies, I have produced a booklet of all the names found, with FRESHNEY and FRISKNEY and the many variants. This book is now available for £3.50 including post and packing (£4.00 for oversea requests).
I hope this page has wetted your appettite Regards and good hunting
JAN BOYLEN

EARLIEST ANCESTOR
Often asked who is the earliest ancestor on file? this would be Magnus de Friskney born circa 1145 and had a son Robert Friskney born 1165 who gave land to a Ranulph (Ralph) de Friskney in the late 12th century
WHY DO FRISKNEY AND FRESHNEY INTERMINGLE THROUGH THE YEARS?
I received the answer to this as - Due to the Lincolnshire dialect pronouncing the "K" as silent ie. FRISNEY as well as prolonging the sounding of the name ie. FRERSNEY, this coupled with many of the population unable to read and write, so it was often the case that whoever wrote an official record spelt it as they thought.
WHAT DOES FRISKNEY AND FRESHNEY MEAN?
They both have the same meaning "Fresh Water".
"MY EXPERIENCES IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN WAR 1899 - 1900 BY TROOPER FRED A FRESHNEY IMPERIAL LIGHT HORSE"
This book was published by the name study in 1998, this is now out of print - when funds allow, this will be re-published at a later date - hopefully before the family gathering in Saltfleet as this is the village of his childhood - we will keep you posted
