It was common practice for the early settlers to brand or mark their livestock so they could properly be identified and returned to the proper owner if they should stray from thier pasture. On the 30th of April, 1807, Samuel registered his brand as "SS" and his mark as a swallow fork cut off the right ear of his livestock.

In 1812, Samuel became involved in a legal action where he, along with Henry Miller and Jacob Short, were sued by the estate of Jean Perrey for 137.15 plus 5.72 in court fees. They evidently lost and paid the Sheriff the amount due on 10 July 1812, it is not now what they were sued for.

In 1815 Samuel, Moses Short, and George Blair were appointed road commissioners for the construction of a road from Turkey Hill leading from Joseph Carr's to George Blair's by Chapman Hill to intersect the state road at David Aikeman's. Samuel signed an original petition for this road along with 23 other neighbors and evedently because of his integrity was made commissioner to see that it got built.

Samuel died on the 9th of June 1830 at the age of 53. He is buried in the Turkey Hill burial grounds, which is now called Green Mountain Cemetery, located just north of the family homestead. His tombstone gives his date of birth and death. The original Shook burial plot was arragned in a circle with Samuel and Susannah in the center and his son Sidney, and his family buried around them. At some laer date the stones were arragned in a straight line where they may be seen today.

There is no will on file for Samuel in St. Clair County records, and no death certificate has ever been located.
